How To Determine Your Belt Size

If you’ve ever shopped for a new belt, you probably know just how difficult it can be to find the perfect fit. And since pants are sized differently than belts, it’s even more difficult if you’re belt shopping online. However, by using a belt size chart and the advice provided in this article, you can better understand how belts are sized and ensure that all future belt purchases fit perfectly.

Belt Sizing 101

Although it would make sense for belts to fit the same as pants, unfortunately, they don’t. Belts are unique pieces of clothing because they have to have enough extra material to go over your clothing while also having enough length to afford adjustable sizing. Generally speaking, however, belts should typically be two inches larger than your waist or hip (depending on where you situate your belt.) In the US, belts are measured in inches and are sized to the middle of five holes. Because of this, you will likely have decent flexibility in the size of belt you wish to purchase.

3 Ways To Measure

Though the sizes of men’s and women’s belts may vary, determining which size you are is all the same. Here are three more quick and easy ways to figure out the right belt for you.

    1. Measuring your own hip or waist circumference is undoubtedly the most accurate way to determine your belt size. First, put on a well-fitting pair of pants that you would typically use a belt with. Then, take a flexible measuring tape and loop it through your pants just as your would a regular belt. When doing this, be sure you have the measuring tape at the same level of which you’ll be wearing your new belt. Note the final circumference and add two inches to the measurement to find your belt size.
    2. Measure an existing belt that fits you well by laying it on a flat surface and ensuring the buckle is pointing left. Use your measuring tape to measure from the far left end of the buckle to the belt hole you typically use. You can either opt for this length during purchase or choose one that’s slightly longer.
    3. Using your pant size is another, yet less effective option, but it can work well for both men and women. Use a pair of pants that fit you well and have a numerical, waist-based size and pick that size. At Grip6 our belts have additional strap built in for adjustability.

Keep in mind that every belt is a little different, so the best way to ensure you know your belt size is to take your own measurements. For reassurance, consider comparing your final measurement with a men’s belt sizing chart or women’s belt sizing chart.
